Votes for Schools

Votes for Schools is an innovative new project launched in 2018, aimed at engaging children with democracy, inviting them to challenge ideas and feel that their voice is valuable. It is also designed to give pupils a better knowledge of current affairs and gets them voting on topics important to them. Every vote by a young person is shared with decision makers and makes a difference.

Each week, students across the country debate the same topical issue. The debate is facilitated by the teacher who always shows a balanced view. At the end of each week, students vote: Skippers pupils have until 4pm on Friday to register their votes.  The results go through to a National data bank and are then released. Pupils’ voices are heard in the real world via social media and in the press.

Voting happens in real time and online, meaning a final result, broken down by gender, age, region and even within each school, will be known on Friday afternoon. The results can be compared within the Skippers community between different classes and Key Stages as well as locally in East Sussex and Nationally.

Votes for Schools sets a new question each week for debate: recent topics have included international aid, fake news, are local shops disability-friendly and women’s participation in science.

Votes for Schools has many benefits to the pupils taking part. It embodies Fundamental British Values; encourages critical thinking and a view on the world around them, empowering pupils to safeguard themselves against risks to personal health and society; provides an insight into the hearts and minds of our young people; and helps prepare young people for a life in a democratic country.

"The PRSHE lessons have definitely prepared me more for life after Skippers Hill. We have learned about the real world and issues that we may face, and that was a great way to have many of my questions about life after prep school answered."
