Alex Gurran

What led you to teaching?
When I was in my teens I worked during the holidays as a Play Supervisor in a summer camp. When you enjoy what you do it doesn’t feel like work and I had a fantastic time coaching different sports and leading different activities. It’s never occurred to me to do anything else.

What inspires you and what you do?
I enjoy being able to see progress made by pupils no matter their starting point and am happiest when seeing my class either succeed or fail with determination and resilience. The competitive side of sport is a complex and intriguing problem to solve. Guiding my students through these challenges, picking apart what and why and then watching the numerous success stories unfold is better than any reality TV show I’ve seen.

What do you love most about Skippers?
Skippers is a place where staff and students are encouraged to try new things, not to fear failure and given the opportunity to learn from experience. I therefore feel enabled to provide an exciting and broad ranging PE and Games curriculum that all pupils can enjoy and succeed in.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I love audio books, in particular epic fantasy novels by the likes of Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan and Terry Mancour; in total I have listened to over 7 months worth of stories over the last 10 years.
