Fencing

Year group: Years 3 & 4, Years 5 to 8

Fencing is a fast and fun sport that requires skill, timing and fighting spirit.

At the Skippers Hill Fencing Club, we play team games that sharpen our reactions and improve hand-eye coordination, then hone the on guard position and footwork. Once kitted out in our fencing gear, we develop the sword-fighting techniques of attack, defence and counter-attack; these skills are quickly put to use in individual and team bouts on the 'piste'.

With the basics mastered, we move onto new techniques, such as the flèche (arrow) and balestra (crossbow) and also develop a keen tactical awareness that will enable us to outwit our opponents.

Senior pupils also have the chance to take their British Fencing épée awards, which comprise practical skills and a theory test at levels 1 to 6. Once the skills of the Skippers Hill fencers are razor sharp, we plan to challenge other schools in the area to team matches. All for one and one for all!

When: Mondays, 3.30pm - 4.30pm (Years 3 & 4), 4.45pm - 5.45pm (Years 5 to 8)
