Performing Arts in Reception
Skippers Hill has a strong tradition of excellence in the performing arts, with many of our senior pupils gaining Performing Arts Scholarships to their secondary school of choice. Reception pupils take part in several performances to parents during the school year, including our annual production of ‘Christmas with the Early Years’. All Early Years and Junior pupils gather together for a weekly Singing Assembly, led by Miss Hemsley, in which they learn and rehearse a variety of songs, some for fun and some to be performed.
Drama is embedded within the EYFS curriculum and is taught by the class teacher in a cross-curricular style throughout the Reception year. In Year 1 all pupils begin having a weekly class drama lesson with one of the class teachers. During the Summer Term prior to Year 1, Reception pupils are also given a Speech and Drama taster session with Mrs Mary Pearson, our specialist Drama Teacher, who offers group Speech and Drama lessons as an optional extra for an additional charge. Mrs Pearson’s pupils commonly work towards the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) Examinations, many passing with Distinction, and additionally can choose to take part in both school and external Performing Arts Showcases and Festivals.
During Reception your child will take part in twice-weekly class music lessons with our specialist teacher, Mrs Carolyn Holleyman. In Year 1 the children have weekly recorder lessons and Choir with Mrs Holleyman as part of the music curriculum. As your child moves further up the school, opportunities for individual music tuition on a wide variety of instruments, with visiting music teachers, become available for an additional charge.
Ballet lessons with Mrs Anita Gunn (ISTD) are available as an optional extra for an additional charge.
