Year 6 build the ‘Sutton Hoo’ Helmet

Posted: 2nd March 2016 | Category: Year 6

Year 6 are currently studying the Anglo-Saxons as part of their History studies this term. One fascinating aspect of history is how we use artifacts to help us find out about the past, and the treasure hoard found at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk is full of all kinds of objects.
One of the most beautiful is the warrior’s helmet that has been painstakingly reassembled to the extent where a replica was also able to be made.
Over the half-term break I gave Year 6 the challenge of making their own replica of this Anglo-Saxon treasure: the results were amazing! We had papier-mache; clay; folded card; silver foil; paperclay; wood . . . so much hard work and so many excellent ideas!
These will now be on display in the Y6 classroom classroom.
