Year 2 settling in well to their spacious new classroom

Posted: 17th September 2014 | Category: Year 2

We have all been settling into our lovely spacious new classroom. A warm welcome to our new members who have already made their mark. Well done!

Our learning focus has been on starting this term’s topic in our two-year cycle, which is “Down Under”. We have explored different places where the children have been, to learn to locate places on maps and to retrieve information, using the smart board and atlases. We are learning about how different Australia is and we are learning to use new vocabulary e,g, continent, ocean, equator, tropics and marsupial, to name a few. We took it in turns to locate places on our large World Map.

We are reading stories and poems about Australia, to learn about their animals. The children then discussed the different animals and told us which ones they liked most. Then we wrote up what we had learned to show their diets and habitats.

We also used information about the animals to reinforce our numeracy skills by sorting, counting and making comparisons.

The purpose of these different activities, in literacy, numeracy and scientific exploration, is to  enable the children to develop learning skills which will allow them to become independent learners.

To support your child’s learning at home, you might want to discover more about Australian animals. A Google search will show you lots of website options.
