Year 2 Make ‘Wombat Stew!’

Posted: 2nd October 2014 | Category: Year 2

Year 2 pupils continue to be enthusiastic and very motivated by our “Down Under” theme.  We have had a lovely video clip from Lizzie (Year 4) and Charlotte’s (Year 3) cousin Miia, of her school in Australia, the Belle School, which added a touch of realism  to our learning.

We have taken a simulated plane journey, with Henry S and Ettienne as pilot and co-pilot.  Cameron and Freddie were our stewards for the trip, learning about Health and Safety, checking seat belts and providing refreshments for the passengers. The children enjoyed the experience and answered questions about their personal details and purpose and duration of visit, with great confidence.

Year 1 and Year 2 combined forces for an outdoor expedition to find ingredients for “wombat stew”.  The children were learning about organising their teams, allocating tasks and negotiating turn-taking. Each team had its own “billy can” to brew up its concoctions.  There were some wonderful creative ideas from the children, to substitute for gum nuts, creepy crawlies and feathers, whilst learning about differentiating between animate and inanimate things.

To follow up our work on sequencing the story “Wombat Stew”, Year 2 will be completing their character masks and  preparing scripts. They will then perform their version of the story for Year 1 next week, which will provide key learning in presentation skills and boost the confidence of the children.
