Year 1 & 2 Shiver their timbers in Hastings!

Posted: 28th June 2017 | Category: Year 1, Year 2

Years 1 and 2 enjoyed a wonderful trip to Hastings last week.  The sun shone, the wind blew, the seagulls circled but didn't get a crumb of our lunch!  We started with a visit to the Fishermen's Museum, where we were given a short talk about, and a look inside, the Net Shops in which fishermen hung their nets to dry.

From there we went to the Blue Reef Aquarium.  The knowledgeable Rob introduced us first to the native fish, flora and other sea creatures that live off the coast at Hastings, then we met some more exotic sea creatures from further afield.  After a somewhat breezy picnic on the shingle beach we were due at Hastings Lifeboat Station.

Volunteer Ken showed us a short video about the work the coastguards do, before explaining what Miss Hemsley would have to do if she would like to volunteer as a crew member (sadly she doesn't live within the requisite 4 miles from the Lifeboat House!).  We then got to look close-up at the biggest of the 3 lifeboats they have.

It was huge!  We learned that they clean and polish it after every "shout", to ensure it is always ready for action.

We are looking forward to showing our photos and telling the school and Year 1 and 2 parents more about it at our assembly, to which they are invited to on Tuesday.
