What is an effective learner?
Posted: 4th October 2017 | Category: Headmaster's Blog
What is an effective learner? Here at Skippers we have been considering this question as a staff body over the past few months. Much has been written on the subject: being successful in any aspect of the curriculum requires a number of key characteristics. An effective learner in our school is:
Curious
Adaptable
Resilient
Self-disciplined
Engaged
Reflective
Positive
Challenge seeking
Our Year Eight pupils led an engaging, amusing and memorable assembly on Monday introducing this learner profile to the pupil body who will now be discussing this in their classes. I am looking forward to hearing from each of the children what they think this looks like in practice … just what does it mean to be positive and engaged in the classroom? How do you show your teachers that you are self-disciplined and resilient in your learning? Of course it is easy to take the easy option, but the most successful learners are brave enough to seek out the challenge and learn from their mistakes. I am sure that there will be many stimulating and fascinating conversations taking place across the year groups in the next week or two as the children engage in developing their understanding of how to be a great learner across the curriculum.
This newsletter is full of stories which exemplify the quality of the learners at the school - both pupils and staff - and I am sure that you will enjoy reading about the pupils’ achievements and the initiatives taking place at this exciting time for the school.
Best wishes,
Mark Hammond.
