A Taste of Dahl

A Taste of Dahl

''A Taste of Dahl'' is an introduction to Dahl's writing, by Anthony Pedley, a well-known RADA trained professional actor. It is at times serious, at times great fun - it is an entertainment, not a lecture!

The play is a “dip into Dahl’s life and books” using Dahl’s own words. Lots of gory details about life at boarding school, where sprouts and cabbage made for some revolting smells around the school, and the cane was the terrifying consequence of any wrongdoing.

We discovered how Dahl's early life influenced his writing; which writers influenced him; which teachers he remembered - good and bad - and where his ideas may have come from. He found that reading was fun, but writing was a challenge, especially writing for children! He discovered that…”the only way to write a book , or a story, that children are going to fall in love with, is for it to have certain essential ingredients...a good fast plot, lots of humour, and a mixture of some extremely nasty people, and some nice people.”

Dahl was a master storyteller and Anthony Pedley brought the stories and rhymes to life with extracts from some of his best known works. The children were at times frightened and at times roaring with laughter - especially at the very loud Whizpoppers!!

There were some great questions from the children at the end of the play which showed how inspired they had been by the performance.

Thank you, Mr Dahl - we love your stories!
