Residential trips: An opportunity for personal development

Posted: 11th May 2018 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

The summer term is a wonderful, busy period and, as I write, Year 6 will be getting outrageously excited - and a little nervous - about their residential trip to Dorset next week. For many this will be the first time that they spend four nights away from home and it is a fantastic, formative experience in the children’s overall development. Given our long-standing - and in my opinion hugely important - ban on electronic devices for residential trips, parents often find this harder than the children! Our learning journey never stops ...

Elsewhere in this newsletter you can read about our effective learner profile but these qualities are not just developed through lesson time: residential trips are key opportunities for pupils to develop resilience, to seek and overcome challenge, to maintain positivity and, without doubt, engage in a variety of learning experiences on many levels.

One of the great benefits of these trips is the quality of the relationships that develop between and among pupils and their teachers. Although I rarely manage them these days, residential trips are in my view one of the highlights of the teaching profession - seeing different children shine in different contexts and pupils seeing their teachers away from the classroom.

Exhausting, fun, action-packed … I wish Year 6 a brilliant time next week and better weather than they had last year! Thank you to the staff who give up their own time and work hard behind the scenes to create these great opportunities for the children.

Mark Hammond.
