Life, the Universe and Everything

Posted: 7th March 2019 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take a group of Year 8 pupils down to the Brighton Center last week to watch Professor Brian Cox. The show was a challenging and entertaining look at the theory of relativity and the space-time continuum, the origins and future of the universe and, ultimately, the meaning of our existence! Several children - featured in this newsletter - described how the evening had ‘blown their minds’ and they were now in a state of shock knowing that the atoms from which they are made had once existed as stardust.

At a time when science remains a shortage subject in teaching, and robotics, artificial intelligence and the future of engineering are regular headline topics, it was fantastic to see our pupils engaging with some very difficult physics during their own free time. We didn’t understand it all but I am sure that each of the pupils took something away and broadened their intellectual horizons.

The school continues to seek ways in which we can improve and develop children’s understanding of the world around them and how it works. There are many new and exciting ideas bubbling away in the staff room. I am excited by the future of the curriculum at Skippers and look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months!

Now, time for a quick drive around Sussex so that I age just a little more slowly!

Best wishes,

Mark Hammond.
