Always Up For A Challenge

Posted: 23rd November 2018 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

The third Wednesday of November is rapidly becoming a highlight in my calendar: for the past few years, I have had the pleasure and privilege of taking the senior girls’ football team to the annual festival hosted by Great Walstead. From the outset, it is evident to me how this event exemplifies the best qualities of the pupils at Skippers.

Plenty of willing volunteers put themselves forward and others step up at the last-minute as injury replacements. The girls organise their own positions and take ownership over their tactics. With the discipline that comes with netball and the strategy that comes from hockey, they are excellent at holding their positions on the field as well as defending narrow and attacking wide. Positive, engaged, self-disciplined, adaptable and up for a challenge - all done in a spirit of camaraderie and good humour.

On an icy Wednesday afternoon, there were no complaints. Three wins, one draw and three losses were no mean return! As always there were some very memorable moments, ranging from one of the girls playing a mighty pass across field which caused the referee an unfortunate injury (the team were most put out that this interference led to an opposition goal!); a couple of instinctive handballs in the box; some excellent goals and a priceless quote of the day which sums the spirit up perfectly: ‘Remember girls, we are not here to learn. We are here to win!’

Well done on such an enjoyable and uplifting afternoon - especially for me!

Mark Hammond.
