Merry Christmas!

Posted: 10th December 2019 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

A fabulous end to this first term of the 2019/20 academic year - so many events and celebrations to round off months of hard work and progress. At this time of year it is so apparent what a special community Skippers is, and how much we contribute to the local community as a school.

The choir performed very well by opening the Mayfield late night shopping and coped brilliantly with performing with the Mayfield Youth Band without ever having rehearsed together! They also focused on the job in hand with admirable determination when a bus caused havoc in the High Street!

I am sure that you will agree that the Christmas Fayre was a great success and my thanks again to the staff, pupils and parents who made this happen. The children raised a very healthy sum for the school council and I look forward to hearing their thoughts on how they would like to spend the money. Children (and parents) had lots of fun and outrageous numbers of sweets were consumed … and why not?! Past pupils turned up once again, some who left the school several years ago; a testament to the enduring impact of the school on the lives of our pupils.

This week Year 5 visited the Mayfield Live Crib to enjoy some beautiful singing and a live re-enactment of the nativity. This proved to be a great opportunity for the children to experience the more traditional aspects of Christmas in the midst of the hurly burly.

Years 1 and 2 put on a stellar performance in their Christmas production and many parents commented upon how much they enjoyed seeing the children having fun and performing naturally. It is wonderful to see children even at this age developing the confidence to speak and sing on stage. My thanks to the teachers who pulled all this together.

The Early Years Nativity is always a highlight and the team managed a minor miracle by successfully including children from two years upwards in a nativity story co-authored by the children. Once again, no-one fell off the stage and given that we enjoyed shooting stars on scooters this year I am doubly impressed! A great team effort that provided plenty of warm glow for a room packed with parents and grandparents.

Thanks to Mr Tier and Mrs Farman for giving up their Saturday evening to support the choir, who sang in Five Ashes village hall with Mayfield Primary School and we will round the term off with our Carol Service in St Dunstan’s Church in Mayfield on Thursday. At which point staff and children will be thoroughly in need of a well-deserved rest - I wish all in the community a happy and safe Christmas.

Best wishes,

Mark Hammond.
