21st Century Students

Posted: 29th November 2019 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

One of the school’s current development themes is to promote the skillset of 21st Century learners. As I am sure you are aware, the workplace is rapidly evolving and the advent of machine thinking and a globally connected workforce will require a rather different approach to employment when the children currently at Skippers go out into the wider world. Problem solving, critical thinking and innovation skills will be at the forefront, with creativity right at the top of the list.

At Skippers we have launched our bespoke 21st Century Skills curriculum in Year 7 this year and I have been delighted with the outcomes from the first topic. Each of the pupils has produced a tourist e-book promoting the great features of Sussex. Drawing together and applying their geography, history, language and digital knowledge they have produced some amazing work - truly synthesising the taught content and applying it to a real world context. Both staff and pupils report excellent opportunities for communication, collaboration and self-direction and the enthusiasm, adaptability and initiative shown by the pupils has been outstanding. The staff have been improving their 21st Century mindset too as the need for collaboration, creativity and adaptability from the teachers is vital to the success of the project.

In January we will be offering parents the opportunity to learn more about our curriculum developments and to see some of the outcomes for children.

In the meantime, I look forward to welcoming you all on Saturday to our Christmas Fayre which is always a fabulous moment in the calendar. Time to dust off the Christmas jumpers once again!

Best wishes,
Mark Hammond.
