Years 3 and 4’s Day at Plumpton Agricultural College

Posted: 1st July 2013 | Category: Year 3, Year 4

Tucked underneath the South Downs lies Plumpton Agricultural College which has a purpose built Educational Centre for KS2.
Years 3 and 4 had a great day's visit learning and investigating many things.

They learned about dairy herds and saw young calves with their mothers, right through to the milking parlour. They were able to press the correct button on the milk tanker to read how much milk had been collected from the herd that morning. From this, Eve estimated how much milk each cow must have given.

The life cycle of a pig was next on the agenda and we all visited the farrowing shed where some piglets were only minutes old. We were told that a family of pigs stay together all the time.

Habitats were investigated in the woodland the children, in groups, went on ‘bug hunts’. Moving stones, lifting logs, investigating bark and plants to collect the creatures was very enjoyable.

The children also went on a ‘tree hunt’ to see if they could find certain trees from the information provided.
While in the woods we were enthralled by the novice tree surgeons practising climbing the trees using ropes and pulleys.

It was a very informative and enjoyable day.

Parents and teachers were pleased to see how well the children participated in all the activities.

The sun shone, the sky was blue and the weather was warm!

Thank you to all the parents who helped make the day go so well.
