Developing Skills and Knowledge at Grounds Day

Developing Skills and Knowledge at Grounds Day

The pupils of Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a busy and fun-packed day in their fantastic grounds.

Following on from their science studies, the Year 1 pupils started the day by learning how to plant flowers, marigolds to be precise, and they then took them home to look after.

Later in the morning, the Year 1 and 2 pupils joined together in the woodland and were challenged to complete a scavenger hunt. Year 1 had to find and match items of certain colours and then use their senses to see, hear and touch items they found within the woods. Year 2 pupils completed a stimulating activity, not just to try to find many different items within the wood, but then to classify them into categories of alive, dead or never lived.

No grounds day would be complete without a campfire and marshmallows which were dutifully cooked by Chris and Jackie and enjoyed by all (including the staff!). In true Skippers style, the children and teachers even managed a few campfire songs.

In the afternoon, Year 2 completed their challenge by preparing the plant beds located by the swimming pool and planting vegetables such as leeks, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and beans as well as flowers. The pupils will be able to take care of these and watch them grow. The children will watch out for the vegetables on the salad table at lunch time very soon!

The day would not happen without the help and support of the staff. Thanks must go to Chris, Miss Hemsley, Miss Tasharrofi, Michelle, Louise P and Jackie.

Thanks must also go to Jo and Chris White who supplied the wonderful vegetable and flower plants for us to use.
