Pupils Take Ownership for Developing the School Grounds

Pupils Take Ownership for Developing the School Grounds

With a last minute change of plans, the Year 7 pupils took part in an alternative but fun session in the wonderful grounds of the school.

By popular request, the Year 1 children asked if they could join the Year 7 pupils for some of their session. The Year 7 pupils were set a challenge to carry out a site survey to think about, discuss and formulate ideas for further potential projects within the grounds.

The school is keen for the pupils to be able to take ownership of their environment and this was an ideal opportunity for them to identify appropriate areas, think about use and purpose and to consider resources to enhance the learning and play outside the classroom.

Of course, they had the unexpected benefit of the Year 1 pupils to assist, many of who shared some wonderful ideas, wishes and dreams with their Year 7 cohorts.

Following a walk around the playground, field and woodland areas, lists of ideas were formulated. The Year 1 pupils were so excited to ‘help’ their older friends. The Year 7s then returned to the mud kitchen area where they discussed further ideas for development and also helped to tidy the area and re-group some of the current equipment.

Their hard work, imaginative ideas and most importantly their amazing camaraderie with the younger pupils, earned them a special treat of a campfire and cooked marshmallows. A campfire is not the same without some fun songs and time to relax and reflect.

Thanks must go to Nathalie, Mr T and Miss T for their help and to Chris with his professional fire-lighting and marshmallow cooking skills.
