Year 6 visit Imperial War Museum

On Friday 6th February the girls in Year 6 met in Mayfield at 7.30am in order to travel to London to visit the Imperial War Museum.
The trip was organised and funded by The British Legion via a former Skippers parent – Carole Stilwell – and we travelled with Year 6 children from Mayfield Primary and Five Ashes Primary.
We visited many exhibits, but the main reason for our trip was to try to understand the sort of impact war has on those involved in the conflict and those affected by its fallout. We had a wonderful workshop where the children went into small groups and were given photographs and artefacts and were asked to ‘discover’ the person in the photograph.
There were VC winners; nurses; munitions workers; widows of soldiers killed in conflict, and all had a story that needed to be discovered. We also looked at artists at war and learnt how to ‘read’ a painting: paintings cannot talk, but they can tell us so much.
A super visit, and very important one, to a great museum.
