Year 5 & 6 Enjoy ‘Hänsel und Gretel’ at Glyndebourne

Posted: 6th December 2013 | Category: Year 5, Year 6

Pupils from Year 6 were bowled over by the production of Hänsel and Gretel at Glyndebourne on Tuesday 26 November.  The sets were, as ever, amazing!

It is always good to have an element of surprise when going to the opera, and pupils had talked about the part of Hänsel being sung by a girl and the witch by a man.

Glyndebourne is famous for its innovative sets and it didn’t disappoint with this production.  The gingerbread house was brought right into the 21st century, looking like the shelving in a supermarket.  Some of the children took a little while to realise that it was the witch’s gingerbread house!  The incredible hut, made from fake corrugated cardboard, was also very impressive.

There was not one child who was not moved by the magic of the fairy tale, written by the Brothers Grimm, which was brought to life on the stage of one of the most famous opera houses in the world.  Even though it was sung in German, few had to follow the translation so we could concentrate on watching the drunken father, the magical forest scene and the wicked witch! The singers were fantastic and the children were amazed when they saw pictures of them out of costume.
How amazing to be right at the front, just beside the violas and basses.  As most of the pupils learn an instrument, they were delighted to be that close to the orchestra, and to understand that neither the ‘band’ nor the singers were ‘miked up’.  It was an unforgettable day.
