Year 2 Explore and Investigate Scotney Castle

To celebrate reaching the end of Key Stage 1, the children in Year 2 spent an exciting day exploring the wonders of Scotney Castle in Kent, accompanied by Miss Hemsley, Jackie, eight parents and two grandparents!

The day started with a walk around the stunning gardens observing various trees and plants. Being intrepid detectives, the children were challenged to try to find the dinosaur footprint which was supposed to have been discovered within the grounds. Sadly, the investigation within the quarry brought no results but full marks for the children's perseverance.

Next, Year 2 went on to explore the boathouse and the castle ruins and moat. The children explored some of the remaining rooms the Hussey family used to occupy in the castle before the main house was built. They were amazed to hear that the family then purposefully destroyed some of the castle to make it look “picturesque”!

On the way to a picnic lunch, the children discovered the ice house with its thatched roof and deep brick-lined pit used to store the ice from the moat.

After a delicious tub of ice-cream and to end an extremely fun day, the children had time to play in the wonderful Wilderness Camp in the woods outside the gardens, complete with den-building, log see-saw, balance course and swing. The day ended with shrieks of laughter and plenty of imaginative, creative play.
