Year 1’s World in Need Collection

Posted: 23rd November 2012 | Category: Year 1

The children in Year 1 have been learning about Africa this term and wanted to support an African project which helps underprivileged children.

World in Need is a local charity which collects old clothes and shoes to help children in many countries including Africa.  The Year 1 class asked parents and families to donate any unwanted textiles, including adults’ and children’s clothes, paired shoes, hats, bags, belts, curtains, towels and bed linen, to the charity to support their fundraising project.

Bags were sent home to families for collection and on Monday 22nd October, representatives from World in Need came to the school to  receive the bags and sort the clothes with the help of some of the senior girls in the Junior Reading Support Room.

Skippers Hill parents were extremely supportive, filling about 18 huge bags of clothes, which were taken away and weighed.  The donations in the bags raised £167!

The money has been used to buy books for a school in Kenya, where the children had previously been sharing one book between fifteen children.

If you want to find out how you can continue to support the charity, please visit their website,, or speak to Mrs. Gadsden, a Year 1 parent, who volunteers her time to support the Crowborough based charity.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated so kindly.
