Year 5 STEM event at Eastbourne College

Year 5 STEM event at Eastbourne College

We were delighted to be invited to take part in a S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Event at Eastbourne College. All of Year 5 attended an excellent array of workshops; many stayed to enjoy dinner and an incredible 3D Laser Light Show.

There was an inspiring Physics presentation, with practical demonstrations of the creation of waves. Many of the children were able to take part in the demonstration and all of the children asked excellent questions.

The children then worked with pupils from St Andrews School and enjoyed a Maths quiz, a Chemistry presentation and working with plastics in the design technology workshops.

The children witnessed screaming Jelly Babies, exploding oxides, some interesting smelling chemicals in the Chemistry lab and exploding and melting marshmallows which showed the impacts of waves in a microwave. A 'slinky' demonstrated the movements of waves and how much they appear in our everyday life.

After a busy afternoon, the children were joined by their parents for dinner and a ‘World First’ 3D laser light show projected onto the buildings.

Staff at Eastbourne College described the children as ‘impeccably mannered’ and ‘a credit to Skippers Hill’, behaviour which we have come to expect from a Skippers' child. The children showed curiosity and independence throughout the day, and we hope that it inspired the next generation of scientists!
