Welcome to Nick Tier - Maths teacher

Posted: 8th November 2017

Nick joined us as a maths teacher at the beginning of October, he has fitted in so well it seems like he has been here for much longer!
We asked Nick how he was settling in and also what made him decide to become a teacher.

How are you enjoying your new role?

I have really enjoyed my first few weeks at Skippers. Getting to know the children has been great and I look forward to doing the same with their parents.

What skills and experience can you bring to Skippers?

I have worked for 20 years as a Maths teacher in prep schools; I have been a Head of Department in two of them, and have also run a Year 7/8 boarding house.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I decided to become a teacher after 6 years as an advertisement sales manager in London; during that time I worked for six Womens’ Weeklies.

What’s the best thing about being a teacher?

The best thing about being a teacher (and perhaps a Maths specialist in particular) is that “lightbulb” moment when a child finally realises how the pieces “fit”, or the topic that they’ve been struggling with for years finally makes sense.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy acting and singing; I am performing with the Newick Amateur Dramatics Association this Christmas, as well as singing with the Ashdown Singers in several concerts; it’s quite strange to be rehearsing Christmas music in September!
I am also an owner at Lewes football club; you can normally find me at the Dripping Pan when there’s a home Saturday match.
