Video: Years 5 & 6 girls learn some new Hockey skills
Posted: 4th October 2017 | Category: Sports, Year 5, Year 6, Years 5 to 8
This week, Years 5 and 6 girls have been practicing their Hockey skills and learning some new techniques, with Mr Minister.
The girls focused on how to receive the ball out in front of their body and arc round to the left to keep the ball on their 'strong side'. This also allows them to keep themselves as a barrier between the ball and any defender coming from behind them, as well as forcing them to attack a defender’s 'reverse stick side'.
They then progressed onto using this in a game situation, keeping the ball strong and turning with the ball on the stick, to make a pass into a wide channel.
The girls came up with the following key points to remember:
- Try and receive the ball at a 1 o'clock position
- Keep the ball away from your body to allow yourself space
- Having the ball away from your feet and in front of your body will make it easier to move left as your feet will not be in the way
- Keep your stick on the ball as much as possible
Hopefully we will see some of this being used in a competitive match situation, soon!
