U11 Girls Hockey Team are Bellevue champions again!

On Tuesday 6th March the U11 girls travelled to London to try and defend their title at a Hockey tournament organised by Weston Green School and involving a number of other schools in the Bellevue Education group, as well as other local schools. A day of mixed weather meant having to battle rain and a slippery, fast AstroTurf in some games, coupled with the sun shining which took its toll on the energy levels.

Skippers started steadily with a 1-1 draw battling back against Sherborne House after falling behind to an early goal. However, the points format meant it was important to get a winning score on the board. This proved tough in the second game after falling two goals behind to Weston Green. The girls battled valiantly but fell short in this game, losing 3-2 to a strong Weston Green team.

Never to get down, the girls regrouped, embraced a few tactical adjustments and showed the determination that we have come to expect from this group and started to show why they were worthy winners last year. An unbeaten run over the next three games with victories over Rosemead 3-0, Gateway School 1-0 and Ewell Castle 1-0, meant the girls finished top of the group stages. The victory in the last minute over Ewell Castle was crucial as it meant we progressed to the final.

A well deserved break and the girls were ready to face Ewell Castle in the final who were eager to avenge their group stage defeat. A totally dominant and professional performance meant the final was never in doubt. Skippers ran out 2-0 winners.

The team were guided well by the silky dribbling from Martha L who gave every ounce of energy throughout. A doggedness alongside in midfield was displayed by Martha H with the stunning Erin W linking play between defence and attack. Erin provided crucial goals throughout and was clinical in attack.

Jess J was a stalwart at the back, making timely interceptions and tackles throughout with Mia G and Ellie G providing tireless support out wide, both in defence and attack. Mia’s confidence grew as the tournament progressed and Ellie crawled off the pitch at the end due to the amount of crucial running she put in. Evelyn D showed versatility in all games, proving valuable both in attack when asked to play as an attacker and again when asked to fill in at the back and out wide.

Isabella P made several important saves throughout and gave a quiet confidence to the rest of the team in front of her.

The girls were a real pleasure to coach and support throughout the day and it was a real pleasure seeing their team spirit, great sportsmanship and resilience in achieving their victory.
Well done to the U11 Girls Hockey Team: Bellevue tournament champions for the second year running
