St Bede’s Musicians entertain the whole school!

Posted: 1st March 2012

Andrew Barclay very kindly brought 20 of his musicians to give his students a platform on which to perform. It is an important part of the Performing Arts Programme at The Dicker to find opportunities for their pupils to play or sing before a live audience. We provided them with a group of 150 aged 4 to slightly over 21!

Tim Lewis welcomed the artists and we were all particularly pleased to see former pupil, Kirsty Sutherland, in the group. Kirsty was very impressed with the recent building development and felt very happy to be back at Skippers, although the rooms and teachers had shrunk somewhat!

The show opened and closed with the talented close harmony Jazz Group who sang 'a cappella'. We were also treated to a Jazz Band, Gospel Singing, individual singers and a duet and a trio.

As an encore, the Rock Band gave their own version of ‘The Lazy Song’ by Bruno Mars, which had the audience singing along.

Our pupils were fully engaged and learned the names of many instruments: the cajon; double bass; acoustic guitar; and the muted trumpet. The performers interacted superbly with our kids and had a great time.

Years 3 – 8 stayed on for an extra ten minutes in a Q & A session. It was really good to see these 16 year old students obviously enjoying the confidence of our younger pupils.

A number of Year 7 and 8 children were asked to sum up their view of the visiting musicians. Here is a sample of their remarks:

"Charlie on Double Bass was 'savage'”

"I loved the Jazz – even my Dad would have liked it; it was really worthwhile despite getting a numb bottom for sitting for an hour!"

More visits by other schools are in the planning stage!
