Spotlight on Alfie Slaney, Year 8 - Technical Superstar!

Book Week at Skippers has looked quite different this year! Both virtually and now we are back in school, pupils at Skippers have been celebrating the joy of reading and taking part in various book related activities such as Book Fairy hunts, Online Drama Workshops and of course the annual House Competition.

On World Book Day, Skippers also premiered their own version of The Masked Reader inspired by the primetime TV show. Various Skippers celebrities shared extracts of their favourite books and it was up to the children to decide the identity of each reader…. Can you guess who's behind the mask?

Of course, this would not have been possible without the technical know-how and expertise of Alfie Slaney in Year 8. Senior pupil Alfie has been called upon throughout the year to assist with the production of virtual assemblies, acted as a lighting technician, and also offered invaluable technical assistance to both teachers and students alike during remote learning. He has been an absolute superstar!

Alfie recently received a Headmaster’s Distinction for his latest GSE project showcasing his talents, as well as his help in putting together the Book Week video. You can view Alfie’s Masked Reader video below, as well as some photos from other activities that have taken place over the week.

We asked Alfie a few questions about when his interest began.

When did your interest in technology and ICT begin?

I think for a long time I’ve been interested in technology; I can remember getting a Kindle Fire at the age of 5 and playing on it non-stop. Something that might’ve accelerated my love for tech and ICT was a film school that I’ve gone to every summer since year 3. Although it was more about the acting, I can remember seeing the organizers of the event editing the clips that the adults that were filming us submitted. I also remember going to a coding course for a very popular game called Minecraft a long time ago (maybe when I was 9).

Do you have any plans to use your talents in the future, and what is your biggest achievement so far?

As of the moment, yes. I’m not too sure what my job would be, but I know it might be something to do with computing or computers. I think I’ve truly worked my hardest on my latest GSE project because I was getting great feedback from family and friends.
