Skippers Tackles The National Mathematics Challenge!

Posted: 22nd June 2012

Skippers Hill took part in the National Junior Mathematical Challenge for the first time this year and the 16 participants should feel very proud of their achievements!

The more able mathematicians in Years 7 and 8 joined 240,000 children from over 3,000 schools for the challenge, which was organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust.

The challenges are designed to extend and enrich mathematics in the UK culminating in Mathematics Olympiads for each age group.
Skippers are delighted with the following awards:

Kyle Mathieson:  Gold
William Arnold: Gold
Thomas Ridge:  Silver
Thomas Stilwell:  Silver
Dylan Leisinger: Bronze
Sam Collins:  Bronze
Gabby Mack: Bronze

Kyle Mathieson received the best in school award and missed qualifying for the Junior Olympiad by just a few marks.
Commendations go to Thomas Stone, Sophie Plummer and Beatrice Convert who narrowly missed taking a bronze.

Head of Mathematics, David Pollard, was delighted in the way that these students have risen to the challenge, expanding their horizons outside of the curriculum and is sure that this will become an annual event as maths comes alive at Skippers.  Those receiving a gold award were within the top 6% in the country reflecting how well they performed.

Well done to all who took part!
