Skippers Pupils’ Experience of Performing in The Sound of Music

Posted: 7th June 2012

Sound of Music

Hector Hadow enjoyed playing Friedrich Von Trapp, the eldest boy in the Von Trapp family, in the Rotherfield Players’ production of the Sound of Music recently.  He has shared his account of the experience:

In January, my Music teacher, Mrs Bridger, asked if I wanted to audition for the Rotherfield Players’ ‘The Sound of Music’.  So I auditioned along with over 40 more children. A day later I received  an email explaining that I had been given the part of Friedrich Von Trapp.
Rehearsals began straight away and we started practising the songs. By the time that we had learnt the majority of the songs we started on the acting side of it all. I even had to dance!

There were lots of very late night rehearsals, some on school nights! Everyone now felt like a massive family: the nuns (3 of them were staff from Skippers- Mrs Stewart, Frances and Kim), the children, Maria, Captain Von Trapp and everyone else involved with staging the show.
By the beginning of May, the stage was set and we started dress rehearsals. By this time we had our microphones on and lighting set.  We were so nervous and ready for the opening night. This is when we found out that all four shows were sold out!!

Each night I had great support from family and friends and it was a huge success.  All the children sang “So long – Farewell” at midnight to all the parents and cast at the “After Party”. It was then really hard to say good–bye to all the children and everyone there.

We children were all given a bosun’s whistle (from Chris who played Captain Von Trapp) as a souvenir. We all had so much fun and it is an experience that I will never forget!
