Reception Teacher introduces Woodland Explorers Programme for September 2013

Posted: 14th June 2013 | Category: Woodland Explorers

We are delighted to announce that from September 2013, Reception children will take part in our new programme, Woodland Explorers.

Woodland Explorers will be a weekly programme where learning is taken outdoors and children will throw themselves wholeheartedly into the explorations and activities which have been carefully planned to cover Reception’s seven areas of learning.

Activities will vary from creating 3D pictures in situ using natural materials, making bird feeders from plastic bottles, collecting and planting acorns, to creating a hedgehog nest which the children will check daily to see if anything has moved in.  The range of activities will develop the children’s skills and interests, provide variety and a stimulating learning experience and, equally importantly, will be great fun.

Reception Teacher Louise Hemsley explains why outdoor learning is so important in aiding a child’s learning and development.

“All children love exploring and understanding the outdoor environment, so providing dedicated outdoor learning experiences every week ensures the children remain enthused and engaged long after the activity has taken place. This helps the children to embark on other areas of learning with enthusiasm,  helping to build their confidence and self-esteem.

At Skippers we are blessed with acres of beautiful woodland and meadows, in which we already encourage children to participate in outdoor learning activities. The Woodland Explorers programme will take this one step further, enabling the children to engage in regular activities which will aim to make their learning meaningful and purposeful and will develop an appreciation of all natural and living things from an early age.”
