Reception Choose to Explore the World of Birds

Reception Choose to Explore the World of Birds

One of the joys of teaching in Reception is witnessing the leaps of progress made during the academic year - physical, emotional and cognitive skills are developing at a rapid rate. In the Early Years, we are constantly watching and listening, making sure that no important milestone passes unnoticed. We also look out for those children who are on the verge of achieving a new skill, so that we are there to support the children as they take that step.

Our Reception children enjoy taking responsibility for their own learning, and have also learned that where there are options there is likely to be a vote and possibly a compromise! At the end of last term, we had a discussion about our first topic of the Spring term, and it was decided by a majority vote that we would learn about living things, starting with birds and moving on to animals.

We are lucky in that our outdoor environment at Skippers provides us with an abundance of opportunities to explore and find out for ourselves. Bird spotting and identification, hunting for old nests and spotting bird boxes are activities that we have enjoyed so far, along with making some beautiful models of birds for our display in the classroom.

It was very exciting to discover a nest box in our own outdoor area - and even more exciting to be able to see inside the box, as we have a camera connected to our whiteboard! All it contains at present are a few slug trails, but we are looking forward with great anticipation to the day we might see a busy bluetit building a nest at close hand. Watch this space!
