Reception Experience Diwali

Reception Experience Diwali

We all enjoy being able to access information on the internet to enhance our learning. However, watching a film doesn't quite compare with experiencing something for yourself.

This week, Reception were lucky enough to welcome Naeha Mehta into the classroom, to tell us about Diwali, the Festival of Light. As Naeha came in, carrying bags and boxes, Reception had no idea of the treats in store.

The children gathered around as she unpacked the bags. First out was the beautiful collection of traditional Indian clothing, glittering with golden embroidery, shining sequins and stones. Dilan kindly modelled one of his own outfits, and some of the girls were happy to try on some of his sister's clothes. "Look at the diamonds!" said one of the smalls. "This is like going to the ball!" said another.

Next to emerge were the red and gold Rangoli decorations, arranged in a pattern on the table. Beautifully decorated Diva lamps were placed around them, as inspiration for the clay lamps Naeha had brought in for the children to decorate for themselves. To a background of Indian flute music, the children set to work with paint, glitter and glue. We were so impressed by the care and skill shown as the children produced their individual designs.

The grand finale was the making of traditional sweeties. Enthusiasm and excitement may have overtaken care and skill - but seeing such huge and gleeful smiles, and such sticky hands and faces was a joy - and the smalls still had an appetite for their sausages at lunchtime!

Thank you so much to Naeha for a priceless experience, and for her generosity and kindness, we had a wonderful morning. Rumour has it that Dilan has invited the whole class to "Come over for Diwali" next year - Reception are already looking forward to it!
