Outdoor Learning with Jackie

It is so good to be back at school and making the most of our wonderful environment.

Over the past few weeks, we have completed a number of challenges during our outdoor learning sessions in the glorious woodland and all pupils have taken every opportunity to extend their academic learning, explore and discover what it takes to be a good team member and how to work together in a positive and productive way as well as having fun whilst completing their tasks.

The KS1 pupils showed off their mathematical addition and subtraction skills and were keen to challenge themselves by using ‘big’ numbers.   This week they created tree friends using a base of clay and then sourcing chosen items from the woodland to create their models.  We now have a number of ‘tree friends’ proudly attached to the trees in the woodland watching over us as we work.

The Year 4 pupils had been learning how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.   No calculators in the woods so we used our place-value stick grids and the pupils were given a starting number and then had to show what the answer would be if it was divided by or multiplied by 10, 100 or 1000.   They had to jump the right number of spaces in the correct direction to show the answer on their grid.

The pupils in years 3 – 6 have been completing teamwork challenges and games where they have discovered the importance of collaboration, communication and problem solving.  What seemed to be simple activities proved challenging but fun when having to work together as a team.  The challenges included activities such as ‘the human chair’, hoola hoop challenge, cup stacking challenge, make a human…….. clock, bridge, car or pyramid and flip the tarp.

Have a look at the photos to see how they did.
