Maypole Dancing at The Mayfield May Fair
Posted: 22nd June 2012
Twenty smartly dressed pupils with dancers from Years 4 to 7 dutifully turned out on parade for the Mayfield May Fair. They gathered outside The Flower House on the High Street.
The Jolly Green Giant led the procession, followed by the beautiful May Queen, the Mayfield Silver Band and Skippers children took their place with pride to march up the road to Court Meadow.
Here the May Queen was crowned and the first set of 16 Skippers dancers began the festivities with their opening number.
Three further dances took place and the children really enjoyed giving a faultless performance. The villagers applauded each intricate dance and remarked on the fact that the dancing was directed by the older pupils with no adult interference needed!
The dancers then formed an orderly queue at the ice cream van to collect their hard-earned reward for all their efforts... The Headmaster walked away with a much lighter wallet!
We were all very proud of these volunteers who are helping to keep alive such great traditions as Maypole Dancing and are also supporting local community events.
