Mrs Harvey Talks About Living Languages

The past year has been a time of challenge for language teachers, as for everyone, but also of opportunity: with the upheaval of Brexit, as well as lockdown preventing trips, the purpose and relevance of language learning has been re-examined.

I was lucky enough to be asked to take part in a podcast discussion with other Bellevue language teachers and compare stories: we all have such different backgrounds, motivations and interests, but hold a common belief that languages matter now more than ever!  We have the chance to inspire pupils to go beyond the tourist perception that because your hotel receptionist speaks English, everyone abroad does!

We can enlarge pupils' worlds by opening opportunities and ambition beyond our own shores and giving them access to cultures, people and experiences: online learning is an important part of that.  As society and business moves increasingly online, our children's futures will not be limited by country borders and their language skills will open up communication and possibilities before they even leave the house.

My own experience as a teenager in Brussels showed me how normal it is to speak two or three languages as a matter of course and the Bellevue podcast conversation has inspired me even more to help our pupils see the world in the same way.

Let's hope that we can be back in France soon, but in the meantime I will be bringing French chateaux, the beaches of Martinique and Parisian café culture to Skippers!
