Early years to receive ‘Balanceability’ training

Early years to receive ‘Balanceability’ training

Our children at Skippers love to use the scooters, trikes and bikes, to make their way around our painted road on the playground. There are many learning outcomes from this activity, including the development of core muscle strength and co-ordination.

As part of our current focus on physical exercise and healthy eating in the Early Years department, Mrs Pincott and Miss Sue recently attended 'Balanceability' training. During this training we were surprised to learn that 43% of six year olds haven't learnt to ride a bike (MORI study 2011) and we are keen to give our children a head start in this key skill.

Balanceability is the UK's first accredited 'learn to cycle' programme for 2-6 year old children. It runs along the same lines as the cycling proficiency course for older children and is great fun. We have purchased three adjustable balance bikes, helmets, hi-viz vests and all the resources needed to deliver the course, and we hope to begin next week with the first six children. The children have watched a short film about the training and are raring to go!
