Book Week Brings Everyone Together

Book Week Brings Everyone Together

'Share a Story' was the theme of this year's World Book Day and we took the opportunity to introduce the children to authors and books they might not otherwise have come across.

Mrs Van Dyk held book taster sessions in her English lessons, there were well-attended book groups (with hot chocolate!) and on Friday we enjoyed a visit from the author of 'Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly' books, Captain Johnson.  Stories really did bring us all together, with Year 8 acting as Book Fairies for the Early Years children and Year 7 reading stories to Early Years and Year 1.

Wednesday saw a creative house competition with children working in teams across the year groups to create a favourite book character out of a potato: seeing the confidence, respect and care the children showed in dealing with others from different year groups was a highlight of my week. So much effort had gone into some of the costumes on Friday that it was hard to pick a winner, but special mention must go to our gorgeous Reception class, who stole the show as (some of the) 101 Dalmatians!

We hope children will have come away feeling that there is a book for everyone because, in the words of J.K.Rowling, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book."
