A Warm Skippers Welcome to Miss Michie

We are delghted to welcome Miss Michie who is covering Year 1 whilst Miss Hemsley is on maternity leave. We asked her a few questions about what attracted her to Skippers.

What attracted you to the role at Skippers?

When I first heard about the vacancy, I was really excited because in Year 1 it is very
much about teaching the fundamentals which I absolutely love. Whilst I do have
experience in teaching across both key stages, I particularly enjoy working with the
younger children because I have a strong interest in the teaching of phonics. Also, I
knew that Skippers had a fantastic reputation, not just academically, but also in terms
of developing the whole child. I relished the idea of working in an environment where
children have a love of learning, as they do at Skippers, and also where they are
encouraged to explore their interests and fulfil their potential.

What skills and experience can you bring to Skippers?

I trained to teach through a program called Teach First, which gave me a really good
grounding in educational theories as well as the opportunity to teach in a variety of
year groups at a school in the Midlands. Teaching across a wide range of year groups
has given me the full picture of the educational journey which children go on
whilst they are at primary schools. After Teach First, I brought my experiences back
to Kent, and have continued to teach at a number of different schools, honing my
teaching skills and practising the all-important one of adapting my teaching style to
suit the needs and considerations of any one particular group of children.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I was drawn to teaching because I’d been lucky enough to have a really positive
educational experience myself and I wanted to make this possible for others. I am the
eldest of five girls and can distinctly remember, as a child, dressing up as the teacher,
with my younger sisters as my pupils. At school, I developed a love of English and
words, and I think that ultimately it is the richness of the English language that has
propelled my enthusiasm for teaching. I also love the way in which teaching is
constantly evolving and I am really excited to see the transformative effects of
technology within the profession.

What’s the best thing about being a teacher?

There are so many great things about being a teacher but I would say the best thing is
meeting, and getting to know, so many different people. Moreover, I love inspiring
children and encouraging them to face challenges head on. This is such an important
life skill, even more so in the world we live in now. I am really committed to giving
children a toolkit, not just in terms of knowledge but also the resilience and self-
assurance that is needed to make their mark on the modern world.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

I play and do lots of different sports but what I’m really passionate about is running,
which I do daily, although weather conditions can sometimes derail this! I have
entered a number of half marathons over the last few years, and have loved every
single one of them (I know this sounds mad) but it’s true! During lockdown, I have
really missed the Saturday Park Run and can’t wait for the first Saturday when this
starts back up again. Along with running, I am a keen musician, and playing the piano
and violin has enabled me to be a member of orchestras and accompany choirs over
the years, which I have greatly enjoyed.
