Year 4 went to Kent Life to experience a day as a Viking.
All of the children dressed up and looked amazing (thank you parents).
First, we went into the Cellar to listen to Viking stories. We found out that the Vikings believed that the Earth was made from giants and a massive cow! We learnt about the land of the giants, Odin, Thor and Loki and a great battle called Ragnarok.
We learnt how to play a Viking game called Tafl which is a bit like chess. We were really good at this game and played against each other in teams.
Once we had finished our games, we moved on to making Viking jewellery. Everyone made a Viking brooch to take home. They were a bit fiddly but they looked great once they were finished.
After lunch, we listened to a Viking lady who had time travelled! She told us all about life in the Viking times. We found out that they drank Mead, they ate bones of animals and they went to the toilet in a hole outside. They even used leaves instead of toilet paper!
Our favourite part of the trip was learning about Viking weapons. Flo was an amazing model for a Viking helmet, shield and chain-mail. We each got to have a go at using a sword to protect ourselves. Once we had mastered sword fighting, we used shields to make a tortoise shape which protected us from the 'rocks' that the teachers threw at us.
For the final part of the afternoon, we learnt about Viking voyages. Did you know that the Vikings used to have ravens on their boat? They used to release the bird to see if it could find land. If the bird didn't come back, they followed the direction it went in. If it did return, it meant that there was no land near the boat.
We then went into a Viking market place with a lady who taught us to haggle. Some people bought items from her while some children got bought as slaves!
We all had a great day out and learnt a lot about the Vikings.
