The Y5's made Solar systems and made the Sun and the planets to scale. Then, using the same scale, they paced out the distances between the planets in the school grounds. Instead of pacing out 65 million km from the Sun to Mercury they paced out 5 metres, but it was still a squeeze to fit in Neptune at 360 meters from the Sun! When we practised in the classroom and on the playground, the smallest planet Mercury was miniscule and kept getting mistaken for fluff or gravel. The children put in incredible effort and could see what an incredible Solar system we live in!
