What a super start to 2017!

Posted: 19th January 2017 | Category: Headmaster's Blog

What a super start to 2017! Our new joiners have received a warm welcome from their classmates and have settled beautifully into life at Skippers as the snow and frost have arrived.
I was delighted with how engaged every individual child was throughout our well-being activities last week. Staff and pupils alike took part in mindfulness workshops, healthy eating, massage, art therapy and fitness challenges.

The senior pupils also ran an afternoon tea for the local villagers who may be feeling the post-Christmas pinch as families return to their busy lives. After a few inevitable giggles at something ‘new’, the children really settled down to their sessions and I am sure each of them took something away from the week.

Focusing upon our own physical, emotional and psychological well-being is increasingly important in the modern world. Statistics on adolescent and child mental health remain an ongoing concern as young people face unprecedented pressure and influence in our evolving digital world. Of huge encouragement is the research data released this week by the Independent Schools Council on how well the independent sector, as a whole, helps develop children’s mental toughness and resilience.

A comparative, quantitative study in the key mental characteristics of control, commitment, challenge and confidence shows how well independent schools such as Skippers enable children to develop strengths in this area. In addition to ‘focus weeks’ such as this, the breadth of the curriculum, the attention we pay to the individual and the quality of the relationships between pupils and staff all underpin the development of a confident and resilient mindset that sets our children on a positive path.

Well done to all the children and staff for making it such a successful week and an encouraging start to 2017.

Best wishes,
