Rulers and feet at the ready!

Posted: 14th June 2013

This week in Reception the children have been learning about measurement, with a particular focus on length and weight.

The children started by measuring different lengths, comparing different lengths using rulers and their feet, much to their amusement! The purpose of this activity is to help the children develop an understanding of mathematical language, including words such as shortest and longest, enabling them to apply it to everyday objects.

We then looked at weights, applying similar principles to measuring lengths where words including heavier, heavy, heaviest, light, lightest and lighter were all used.

The children took it in turns to estimate which items would be lighter or heavier compared to others. In conjunction with their current beach topic, they then had to think about how they could balance the scales using stones and shells.
