Hooray! Summer has arrived….

Posted: 10th May 2016 | Category: Kindergarten

Hooray! Summer has arrived .... well, we have definitely had one good week and we are hoping for more! The Summer Term is well underway and our children are displaying a frantic need for sand and water, in equal measure, both inside and out.

A very warm welcome this term to Evelyn, Jacob, Ben, Leo and Daisy who have joined the Kindergarten family.  All are settling in splendidly and getting to know and make friends with our ‘old hands’.

For the first part of this term our general topic is ‘growing and changing’.  With this is mind we organised a very special delivery the second week of term - a small pot of four caterpillars delivered by post which, we are assured, will become Painted Lady butterflies.  We have been avidly watching them grow and they are now on the verge of becoming pupae - or chrysalises!  The children have all made their own pom-pom caterpillars and mirror-image butterfly pictures and we are about to start on a papier-mache cocoon to add to our eye-catching display.  Watch out for more photos - in a couple of weeks - of the children releasing the butterflies and watching them flutter off to start their lives.

Our budding gardeners have also been responsible for a frenzy of planting, reminding us each day that the plants need watering and going off to fetch the various buckets and watering cans.

Our stunning outdoor environment gives us wonderful opportunities for learning and discovery: we count, compare groups of objects, use positional language, study shapes in the environment; we enrich our vocabulary through talking about our natural world, we engage in imaginative role play in the woodland and Mud Kitchen; we show care and concern for living things and the environment and develop an understanding of growth and change.

Emma, Jackie, Freya and I are all extremely proud of our wonderful children!
