Years 7 & 8 take part in UKMT Junior Maths Challenge

Posted: 9th May 2014 | Category: Year 7, Year 8

On 1st May, 20 pupils from Years 7 & 8 took part in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Challenge, just before leaving for London to see War Horse.

Participants answered 25 multiple choice questions designed to develop mathematical thinking and reasoning. There is a twist, as marks are deducted for incorrect answers.

Once the results are in, in a few weeks’ time, the top 40% of children in the UK will receive an award with 1,200 high flyers invited to take part in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

David Pollard, Head of Mathematics at Skippers, said: “The maths challenge has become part of the calendar at Skippers, giving our able pupils an opportunity to show their talents against others in the UK and experience a ‘public examination’. We find that it helps to generate an interest and broader view on mathematics, beyond the Common Entrance Curriculum.”

Example question from the Junior Maths Challenge:

How many minutes are there in 1/12 of a day?

A: 240    B: 120    C: 60     D: 30     E: 15

Answer: B

Further question examples will be displayed around the school in the coming weeks. See how many you can answer.
