Years 3 and 4 listen to Major Tim Peake at Herstmonceux Science Centre

Years 3 and 4 visit Herstmonceux Science Centre

On a sunny Monday 9th May, Years 3 and 4 travelled by coach to Herstmonceux Science Centre..….What treats awaited us!

A few minutes after our arrival, we were able to listen in to Major Tim Peake speaking live from space to a school in South West England as the space station passed over our part of Earth. He sounded so clear!

Another rare event was that on this day, Mercury could be seen from Earth passing across the sun and some amateur astronomers were kind enough to allow us to look through their specially filtered daytime telescopes to witness this event which only happens a few times every century.

Bridge building in teams and a tour of the historic telescope observatories were highlights as well as time spent “playing” in The Water and Discovery Areas.

Inside, the fascinating Light Room and other ‘hands on’  activities were great fun and we hardly had enough time to try them all!

After the inevitable exciting visit to the shop to purchase a momento of the trip, we returned to school, tired but keen to return to this amazing attraction almost on our doorstep.
