Year 6 Go All Arty in Eastbourne!

Posted: 9th November 2015 | Category: Year 6

I don’t know whether any of you have visited the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne, but if not we recommend it very highly.

Year 6 was invited by Eastbourne College Art Department for an afternoon’s creative ceramics. We knew that we would be invited to lunch before the workshop so decided to make a day of it and spend some time at the nearby Towner Gallery. The Towner is an award-winning contemporary art gallery and museum and it holds major exhibitions of UK and international contemporary art – and as a museum, it also has a renowned collection of art from across the ages.  Learning and participation are at the heart of what the Gallery does and we were invited to go behind the scenes and visit The Collection.

We saw some magnificent, and very important, works of art and had everything explained to us in fascinating detail. We were then free to roam the other galleries and view some wonderful pictures.

After our lunch at the College we were taken to the Art Department and the children spent an afternoon making some wonderful masks. Our History topic this term is the Ancient Greeks and the children have been learning all about their myths, gods, goddesses and monsters. So they produced clay masks of Poseidon, Medusa, Aphrodite and many more. We have left them there to be glazed and fired and hope to have them back in time for the end of the month, when we will find somewhere prominent to put them on display.

A great day out - educational and lots of fun!
