Year 5’s visit to Fishbourne

Posted: 10th November 2015 | Category: Year 5

On Monday, twenty enthusiastic Year 5s set off with Mrs Harvey and Mrs Foden for a day at Fishbourne Roman Palace. We first had to answer the initial question: “Where is it?!” and established that we had missed the actual palace by some 1,800 years! The children then got hands-on with the archaeological evidence to establish how we could know so much about it. They all did some good sleuthing, finding out about amphorae, mosaics and Roman toothpaste ingredients in the process!

Our second workshop involved learning lots of everyday Roman skills - writing on tablets (the wax kind!), spinning wool, cooking, building and playing. The final activity was of course to admire the incredible mosaics and we made some sketches to inspire us to create our own in class. We were lucky enough to have mums Davina and Mona with us and I would like to thank them very much for their help on this fascinating visit.
