What is Numeracy Ninjas?

Posted: 28th September 2016

Numeracy Ninjas is a numeracy intervention that we are currently using within Year 6, 7 & 8 Maths lessons to practise twice a week pupils’ basic mental calculation strategies and also to empower them with the numeracy skills and fluency.
In each lesson students complete a 5 minute skills test which includes: 10 questions on mental numeracy calculation strategies, 10 timestables questions and 10 questions on key topics.
Through growth mindsets and the promotion of regular practice, we want to ensure pupils’ perception of Maths is positive and one in which they take pride and enjoyment.
The tests are marked in class by pupils who record their Ninja Score out of 30. This corresponds to a particular colour Ninja Belt.
Only a Ninja Score of 30 will earn students the coveted Black Ninja Belt! With repeated Black belt scores accumulating to ‘Grand Master’ status.
Pupils are being rewarded with certificates for each colour belt and the coverted ‘Grand Master’ certificate will be accompanied by a badge.
The pupils certainly seem to be enjoying the activity and the first batch of certificates were awarded in Tuesday’s reward assembly. Every pupil has progressed over the first three weeks of term and I don’t think it will be too long before the first black belt certificates are issued.
