Understanding Size with the Billy Goats Gruff

Posted: 25th January 2013 | Category: EYFS

Reception has been learning about comparative size, e.g. small, medium and large.  They used teddy bears to help them and by the end of the week, the children had progressed to ordering not three, not four, but TEN bears in height order!

To aid their learning, the class read the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff', which is about three billy goats - a small goat, a middle sized goat and a big goat - who want to cross a bridge to get to the greener grass, but are stopped by a troll who tries to eat them.

Reception have enjoyed acting out the story in the rather-muddy school woodland.  The part where the troll jumps on to the bridge and shouts, "I'm going to eat you up!" was acted out with particular relish.  As well as being lots of fun, the activity has helped them to gain a better understanding of comparative size.
